The functionality and versatility of quilted vests make them perfect for outdoor activities during the fall and winter months. Their construction provides warmth around the torso while also allowing for more arm movement than a traditional jacket. Outdoor retailers like L.L. Bean and Eddie Bauer, women’s wear retailers like J. Jill and even equestrian apparel lines such as Horseware Ireland all offer vests for a variety of applications. Waterproof and breathable shells, generous fill, and a slim fit are all attributes that attract horseback riders, fashionistas, and outdoor workers alike.
Suppliers in the promotional products industry are capitalizing on this trend as well. Currently, Landway (asi/66238) offers a lightweight quilted puffer vest (7325) for women. It includes a 100% polyester shell and lining, 7-oz. polyfill insulation, a full-length inner storm flap and a slim fit. Says general manager Terry Chen: “They offer the best combination of style, warmth and versatility.”
Quilted vests are perfect for a retail-inspired look as well as more practical applications. “The quilted vest plays to the layering trend seen in many retail collections, as well as the practical side,” says Gina Barreca, director of marketing at Vantage Apparel (asi/93390). “It gives the wearer a thin layer of warmth without sacrificing ease of movement. The quilt stitching design is not only fashionable, but also helps to keep the insulation in place for increased durability and longevity.” Ideal decorating options, Barreca adds, include embroidery, laser tech patches and laser appliqué.
Vantage Apparel just added the Apex compressible quilted vest (7325) and a women’s companion piece (7326) to their winter-weight jacket offerings. Both will be available to the industry in January. Made of 100% breathable polyester, they feature a rip-stop quilted body and thermally efficient polyfill that provides warmth while remaining lightweight and compressible. “It’s a highly thermal and highly fashionable outerwear piece,” says Barreca, “and it packs into its own pocket.”
Chen says the quilted vest is becoming more popular because manufacturers are working with nylon and polyester to make the garments warm and ultra lightweight at the same time. Thus, they’re easily packable for traveling.
Popular among men and women of all ages, Barreca says the quilted vest is particularly favored by the activewear segment. “We’ve had inquiries for entertainment companies, cold weather outings and upscale corporate gift/catalog programs,” she says. Consider the quilted vest for the performance and activewear sector as well as for a retail-inspired look for promotional campaigns.
